M42 Lens Review: Jupiter 9 85mm f/2

This Russian lens is a direct copy of Carl Zeiss Sonnar 85mm f/2 with its specific European character. Many people call it "The Monster Of Bokeh" because its circular and beautiful bokeh it produces. This lens is suitable for taking portrait pictures for its "glowing" effects.

Now, I would like to show you, how this lens performs by conducting a test which is often called "sweet spot test". I took pictures of the same object at the same angle, 9:30AM in the morning, AWB and using ISO 200. I use all of the apertures available. I put the cropped pictures below the original one.

As you can see, the picture in the wide open f/2 is a little bit soft and glowing. The pictures getting sharper and sharper at f/2.8 onwards. In my opinion, the sweetest spot of this lens is at f/4 and f/5.6 if you want sharpness and blurry background. But, if you intend to take portraits, you can use the glowing effects of the lens at f/2 or f/2.8.

I took pictures of female models at f/2 to get the circular bokeh and the glowing effects:

The circular bokeh and the glowing models are so obvious in these pictures. That is why I recommend this lens to get the best of model photography, especially for those who want to use Manual Focus lens.

M42 Lens Review: Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar MC 135mm f/3.5

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar MC 135mm f/3.5, one of the great lenses produces by Zeiss corporation which is famous with its lens's fabulous quality, established by Carl Zeiss himself. At a glance, we can see that this lens is so elegant with its black colored barrel which is so beautiful.. We can see the aperture and focusing ring so clearly . With its 49mm filter ring, the front elemen can be determined that this lens is a first class lens.

Based on my personal test of the lens's sweet spot, I will explain the lens's performance in order to give you clear perception about how this lens is performing. But first, I need to tell you that sharpness and color perception is very subjective. My conclusion here is merely my own opinion. I will let you all decide what is your own perception. This test was conducted using manfrotto carbon tripod, Sony Alpha 700, ISO200, AWB. The test was conducted outdoor on 9:30AM,at f/3.5, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16 dan f/22, without any digital modification except resize and crop.

As you can see that the lens's sharpness is still in its best condition especially for a vintage old lens. A very good detail is still visible even when it is widely opened.

The "Bokeh" swirls beautifully. This is why enormous number of people have fallen in love with this Zeiss's lens.

I'm confident to recommend this lens for those who is still searching for a very good quality manual lens.

There are many methods is used in order to make macro or close-up photos, such us macro lens usage, reverse ring method and close-up filter.
